St. Anthony School to close high school, continue preschool through eighth grade

St. Anthony School announced it will no longer offer instruction for grades nine through 12 beginning with the 2026-27 school year.

While the high school division will cease operations, the school plans to continue serving students from preschool through eighth grade using a new multi-age classroom model, according to an announcement from the Rev. Monsignor Terrence Watanabe, pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Church in Wailuku.

“This decision reflects current realities, yet it does not close the door on the future,” St. Anthony said in a news release. “With sufficient enrollment and the resources needed to ensure long-term sustainability, the possibility of reopening the high school remains.”

The school said that by closing next year, current St. Anthony High School students will be able to complete the academic year without disruption.

“While the closure of the high school is a difficult decision, it does not mark the end of St. Anthony School’s 178-year-old story,” Watanabe said. “With continued community support, we welcome new possibilities to guide St. Anthony School forward.”

The news release added that the school’s newest program featuring Hawaiian studies, with an emphasis on the Hawaiian language, will continue, along with other programs such as the school’s Sports Academy initiative, which focuses on developing student-athletes.

Families enrolling their children in preschool through eighth grade are being asked to submit applications for the 2026-27 school year by March 15 at www.sasmaui.org/copy-of-enrollment. The St. Anthony School office can be reached at (808) 244-4190 or by email at mainoffice@sasmaui.org
