The Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui has launched a student-operated credit union to provide youth with hands-on financial education.

Working in partnership with HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui is the first Boys & Girls Clubs to open a student-run credit union, according to the local nonprofit.

Through the student-operated credit union, students are taking on roles including opening and managing savings accounts, handling deposits and learning basic banking procedures under the guidance of trained staff and credit union professionals.

According to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui, it’s an important milestone in youth development and financial literacy.

The partnership with HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union helps ensure the students receive accurate financial education while gaining exposure to career pathways in finance and business.

By engaging youth early, the nonprofit hopes to build confidence around money management, encourage positive saving habits and support long-term financial well-being for the participants and their families.

Another benefit of the credit union is that it strengthens family engagement by introducing parents and caregivers to financial tools and resources through their child’s participation in the program.

By bringing financial education into the clubhouse, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui is working to remove barriers to access and create opportunities for youth who may not otherwise experience this level of hands-on learning.

Starting at $4.62/week.
