About 10,000 Maui County customers without power as of noon Saturday
About 10,000 Hawaiian Electric customers in Maui County remained without power as of noon Saturday, March 14, as crews worked to restore service across the state.
A strong kona storm has brought heavy rain, flooding and damaging winds to Hawaii with warnings for Maui County lasting through Sunday.
Hawaiian Electric said utility crews restored electricity to about half of the affected customers in parts of South Maui and Upcountry Maui earlier Saturday morning.
Service was also rerouted to about 4,000 South Maui customers who lost power around 4:50 a.m. after a large sinkhole developed along South Kīhei Road.
Hawaiian Electric said flooding, vegetation and storm debris are preventing crews from accessing some areas of Upcountry, Central Maui, Haiku and East Maui to assess damage and begin repairs.
Across the state, the storm has caused widespread outages.
About 76,000 customers were without power on Oahu on Saturday as crews worked to inspect and repair high-voltage transmission lines damaged by the storm. On Hawaii Island, about 25,000 customers remained without electricity, with most outages reported in the Puna area.
Utility officials said ongoing hazardous weather and flooded roads, particularly in rural areas on the neighbor islands, are slowing restoration efforts. Some customers may also experience repeated outages if additional storm damage occurs after power has been restored.
Hawaiian Electric urged residents to be prepared for possible extended outages through the weekend as the storm moves across the state.
