Community meeting concerning new telescopes on Haleakala set for March 11
The group Hanohano ‘O Haleakalā is planning a community event on March 11 to discuss the proposed development of up to seven new telescopes on the summit of Haleakala.
The gathering about the Amos Starr Project will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Pilina Event Center at the University of Hawaii Maui College.
The group says the event is being organized by members of the Protect Haleakala Community Coalition to create an alternative venue where community members can set the terms of engagement and share their knowledge about the mountain, its cultural significance and stewardship.
The evening will begin with opening protocol and feature presentations from community organizations including Protect Haleakalā, Kilakila ʻO Haleakalā and Kākoʻo Haleakalā. Presenters will share the cultural, environmental, and historical importance of Haleakalā, as well as the decades-long history of community resistance to development on the mountain.
Organizers say community members who were unable to testify during the official hearings will have the opportunity to record video testimony, submit written testimony, sign petitions related to the project and contribute to a collective banner of protest, which will be presented to the Air Force at the conclusion of the evening.
Light refreshments will be provided.
