Emergency shelters opened on Lanai and in Hana on Friday as a strong kona storm continues to bring heavy rain, flooding and high winds to Maui County.
The American Red Cross, in coordination with the Maui Emergency Management Agency and the Maui County Department of Human Concerns, opened a shelter shortly before 1 p.m. Friday at the Lanai High and Elementary School gym in Lanai City. Another shelter opened at 4:30 p.m. at the Hana High School cafeteria.
The two sites add to four shelters that opened Thursday on Maui and Molokai.
Other shelter locations include Maui High School gym in Kahului, Kaunakakai Gym in Kaunakakai, Lahaina Civic Center in Lahaina and the South Maui Community Park gym in Kihei.
Officials said the shelters were opened proactively to provide a safe place for residents and visitors if conditions worsen. No evacuation orders had been issued as of Friday.
Shelters will provide cots, food and water. Residents are encouraged to bring bedding, essential supplies and medications. Pets are allowed if they are kept in crates.
According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, the kona storm is expected to intensify tonight and continue through the weekend.
Maui County remains under a flood watch through Sunday night and a high wind warning through Sunday morning.
