Water conservation urged during ongoing kona storm

The Maui County Department of Water Supply is urging residents and visitors to conserve water as a prolonged kona storm continues to affect the county.

Officials said severe weather, including heavy rain, strong winds and flooding, can damage water facilities or disrupt power to wells and pumping stations.

Those conditions could lead to temporary service interruptions or water shutoffs while crews assess damage and make repairs.

For safety reasons, some repairs and maintenance work may need to wait until weather conditions improve, the department said.

To help maintain water availability for essential needs, the department is asking the public to limit water use to drinking, cooking and personal hygiene.

Residents are also advised to turn off irrigation systems, ice makers and other devices that automatically draw water and avoid unnecessary water use whenever possible.

Residents can sign up for alerts or find more information at mauicounty.gov/water.

Starting at $4.62/week.
