County seeks input on field house and community center proposed for West Maui
The Maui County Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking public input on a proposed field house and community center in West Maui.
Tentative plans were announced at the county’s last Lahaina Community Meeting.
“The Lahaina community has asked for more recreational facilities and community gathering spaces,” department Director Patrick McCall said. “This represents far more than a field house or community center — it is an investment in connection, healing and resilience. These facilities will support not only recreation, but also the long-term recovery and overall well-being of our West Maui neighbors, family and friends.”
The department is seeking input on site layout, building design and function, as well as facility programs.
The public can provide feedback and learn more during an in-person open house scheduled for 5:30 to 7 p.m. May 19 at the Lahaina Civic Center Social Hall and an online open house from May 20 to June 14 via a project website.
Locations for the facilities have not been finalized but are expected to be near the Lahaina Recreation Center complex.
Plans for the field house include two regulation-sized basketball courts that can also be used for volleyball and pickleball. The community center will include a certified commercial kitchen, meeting space for community and individual ʻohana gatherings, and space that can serve as an emergency shelter and offices for county staff.
The project team includes the department and consulting partner G70 International. The county plans to report results from the outreach at a Lahaina Community Meeting this summer.
