Rescuers found a 37-year-old Lahaina man about 100 feet down a cliff face on Wednesday after he was reported missing while fishing.
The Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety responded after the man’s fishing companions reported him missing, saying he was last seen at about 2 a.m. They had found his fishing pole along the cliffs at Honokohau Bay, but he was nowhere in sight.
Firefighters searched for the man by water, land and air, deploying multiple units including an engine, Jet Ski, ladder truck, helicopter and a drone operator to comb the area. A U.S. Coast Guard vessel also responded from Maalaea Harbor.
Rescuers found the man in heavy vegetation about 100 feet down a cliff on the north side of Honokohau Bay around 11 a.m. Wednesday. He was airlifted to safety by firefighters aboard the department’s Air 1 helicopter.
The department said the man was uninjured. He apparently fell after becoming lost or disoriented in the dark while trying to return to his vehicle along the road.
