Lakota Lee, Ava Kawahara win individual MIL golf titles
Lakota Lee of Kihei Charter won the Maui Interscholastic League individual championship after shooting a 226 in the three-round tournament.
Among the girls, Maui Prep’s Ava Kawahara won the championship with a 12-shot advantage over the second-place finisher.
The MIL individual championship golf tournament concluded Saturday at Makena Golf and Beach Club. Earlier rounds, including a play-in tournament, were held at Waiehu Golf Course, Maui Nui Golf Course and Wailea Gold Golf Course.
Lee finished 10 shots ahead of the boys runner-up Aaron Hall (236) of Maui Prep, who was followed by Baldwin’s Liam Lopez (239) and Maui High’s Landon Oshita (239). After the first round, Lee was two shots off the lead after shooting a 73. In the second round, he duplicated his score and turned in another 73 before he carded 80 shots on the final round.
The top 15 individuals from the MIL have qualified for the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Boys Golf State Championship on May 12-13 at Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course on Oahu.
The Baldwin boys locked up the team championship April 11 at Waiehu Municipal Golf Course.
At the same time, Kawahara was consistent. She was tied for the lead after the first round, but cemented her hold on it with a 75 scorecard in the second round. In the final round, Kawarhara was even better with a 67, the lowest single-day score for any of the MIL girls golfers at the individual championship tournament.
Naiya Hamasaki of Kamehameha Maui finished second in the girls tournament, followed by four golfers from Maui Prep — Sacha Salem (233), Tehya Chumley (234), Kelsey Reul (237), and Sofia Mallari (240).
With that kind of depth, Maui Prep also won the MIL girls team championship.
The top 11 individuals from the MIL qualify for the girls state tournament May 5-6 at
Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.
MIL organizers thanked the local courses for donating rounds during the season, including Wailea Blue, Maui Nui, The Dunes, Kaanapali Golf Courses, King Kamehameha Golf Club and Pukalani Golf Club.
