Maui High judo team shows depth
With depth across multiple weight classes, Maui High dominated the podium at a Maui Interscholastic League Judo tournament on Saturday.
The Sabers’ Evan Dela Cruz (121), Ethan Shiroma (178), Alika Kish (198) and Coen Perriera (220) each earned first-place honors with Perriera winning his weight class uncontested.
Kamehameha Maui’s Mason Kurokawa (114), Namakakekoaokalani Andaya (132) and Kalahiola Jeremiah (145) also finished atop their respective brackets Saturday.
Maui High added to its performance with numerous second-, third- and fourth-place finishes across several divisions.
At 132 pounds, Baldwin’s Brian Suarez Sanchez placed second, while Kevin Gutierrez-Juarez recorded King Kekaulike’s top finish by taking third.
The boys championships included 55 contested bouts with 40 athletes.
In the girls competition, Maui High’s depth proved decisive again, as the Sabers claimed five top finishes, including Chezarey Barut (109), Kristen Camit (129), Lauren Imura (139), Madelline Milliet (172) and Kellee Yi (220).
King Kekaulike’s Abigail Tamayose won the 98-pound bracket, and Ariana Macanas finished first at 122 pounds.
Baldwin’s Darcy Petrus won the 154-pound division uncontested, while teammate Jayda Biringer finished second at 139.
Maui High’s Jazirae Manuel (122), Olive Harper (129), Amanda Juarez (172) and Dejah Agurre (220) each finished second. Kamehameha Maui’s Irie Ho’oikaika-Mansanas (98) and Malia Kim (109) also recorded runner-up finishes.
The girls championships featured 14 contested bouts among 20 athletes.
The MIL Judo Championships will be on May 2 with the 2026 Hawaii High School Athletic Association Judo State Championships set for May 9 at Neal Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu.
