NWS flood watch extended to 6 a.m. Monday

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended a flood watch for Maui County through 6 a.m. Monday, saying flooding could redevelop quickly due to saturated soils and elevated stream levels following recent rainfall.

All emergency shelters in Maui County were closed Saturday, April 11, as weather conditions improved.

While more favorable conditions are expected throughout the day Saturday, there remains a slight chance of rain on Molokai and the potential for localized flooding through Monday morning.

A low-pressure system has been drawing moisture northward across the state, bringing heavy rain to some areas. It is the third storm in a month, increasing the risk of flash flooding, rapid runoff and landslides, even with less rainfall.

Due to improving conditions, the American Red Cross and the Maui Emergency Management Agency closed all shelters Saturday.

The Lanai landfill was closed Saturday due to unsafe operating conditions caused by heavy rain, according to the county Department of Environmental Management’s Solid Waste Division. The landfill is expected to reopen with normal hours Tuesday.

Residents and visitors on Maui and Molokai are asked to conserve water as a precaution. Officials encourage people to fill clean containers with water for essential use if needed. Limiting nonessential water use will help maintain reliable service in the event of disruptions or additional storm-related damage.

The water conservation advisory is set to expire when the flood watch ends.
