The inaugural Hawaii High School Athletic Association Surfing State Championships are taking place this weekend at Hookipa Beach Park on Maui.
Spectators will need to access Hookipa Beach Park on Friday and Saturday using free HHSAA shuttles from the parking lot off Holomua Road. There will be no spectator parking at Hookipa Beach Park, which closed for competition use at 5 p.m. Thursday. The closure will remain in effect through 5 p.m. Saturday.
Shuttles will run to and from the parking lot as needed, starting at 6 a.m. Friday and Saturday. County officials are asking spectators to follow signage to the parking lot approximately a mile away on Holomua Road. Drivers in the area should exercise caution and expect delays.
Heats will begin at 7 a.m. Friday and Saturday, with action scheduled to end at 4:30 p.m. Friday and 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Awards will be presented after the finals Saturday.
While this is the first year of the high school state championships, surfing has been a sanctioned sport in the Maui Interscholastic League since 2014.
The championships will feature 174 of the best high school surfers and bodyboarders across Hawaii.
All five of the state’s high school leagues are competing in the state championships, which will crown boys and girls team and individual champions. The event has boys teams from 36 high schools and girls teams from 27 high schools, competing in shortboard, longboard and bodyboard divisions.
Live results will be available throughout the tournament at liveheats.com/events/418818.
