Authorities suspend search for missing swimmer

The U.S. Coast Guard and Maui County authorities have suspended their search for a 75-year-old swimmer who went missing Friday off Kaanapali Beach.

John Weems, 75, of North Carolina was last seen snorkeling off Kaanapali Beach. He was reported missing Friday afternoon by a concerned family member after he didn’t return from his planned snorkeling trip.

According to Maui Police, Weems had texted a family member at 1:30 p.m. Friday indicating that he was going snorkeling. Police said that at approximately 3 p.m., a guest reported to hotel staff they had observed what appeared to be a man in distress in the ocean.

The U.S. Coast Guard joined the search for Weems after the Maui Fire Department requested assistance at about 6:38 p.m. Friday.

Search efforts by the Maui Police Department, Maui Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard continued until sunset.

The search continued Saturday morning with additional assets joining the effort, and crews continued to look for Weems on Sunday and Monday, utilizing aircraft, drones, rescue watercraft and ocean vessels.

Maui Fire said more than 842 square nautical miles were searched. The Coast Guard also reported that crews searched 1,275 square miles for more than 77 combined hours.

“Following extensive search efforts carried out alongside our partner agencies, we have made the difficult decision to suspend the search for Mr. Weems,” said Lt. Tyler Peterson, search and rescue mission coordinator, Coast Guard Sector Honolulu.
