Coast Guard, partners search for missing swimmer off Maui
The U.S. Coast Guard is searching with local authorities for a 75-year-old man who went missing Friday in the water off Maui.
John Weens, 75, was last seen snorkeling at Black Rock near Kaʻanapali Beach. He is approximately 5 feet, 10 inches tall.
Coast Guard Sector Honolulu command center watchstanders received a report at 6:38 p.m. from the Maui Fire Department, which also requested assistance with the search.
Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and coordinated the launch of a 45-foot response boat from Coast Guard Station Maui and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point.
The crew of fast response cutter USCGC Oliver Berry is expected to join the search Saturday.
Anyone with information that may assist in search efforts should contact the Coast Guard on VHF-FM channel 16 or call the Sector Honolulu command center at 1-800-552-6458.
