Authorities searching for missing swimmer off Maui

The U.S. Coast Guard and local authorities are searching for a 75-year-old man who went missing Friday while snorkeling off Maui.

According to Maui police, John Weems was last seen snorkeling near Black Rock at Kaʻanapali Beach. He is described as white, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 170 pounds, with gray hair and brown eyes.

Police said Weems was reported missing Friday evening after he failed to return home. Family members said he texted at 1:30 p.m. saying he was going snorkeling. At about 3 p.m., a hotel guest reported seeing what appeared to be a man in distress in the ocean, according to police.

Coast Guard Sector Honolulu command center watchstanders received a report at 6:38 p.m. from the Maui Fire Department, which also requested assistance with the search.

Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and coordinated the launch of a 45-foot response boat from Coast Guard Station Maui and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point.

Search efforts continued until sunset, and the crew of fast response cutter USCGC Oliver Berry joined the search Saturday morning.

Anyone with information that may assist in search efforts should contact the Coast Guard on VHF-FM channel 16 or call the Sector Honolulu command center at 1-800-552-6458.
