This year Molokai softball came together as a team built on support, trust and teamwork, creating a successful season defined by growth, unity and shared experiences.
Committed to representing the Molokai community with pride, the Lady Farmers softball team spent the season focusing on supporting one another on and off the field. The team embraced challenges as opportunities for growth and continued development together, according to head coach Shannon Pastrana, who added that this season really reflected the team’s character and identity, which helped them earn a spot in the Hawaii High School Athletic Association state tournament.
“Another special part of this team was their resilience,” said Pastrana. “Their heart, unity and dedication are what truly made this team special.”
Although the Lady Farmers did not secure a victory at the state competition, the experience allowed them to compete against some of the top programs and showcase their capabilities. The team also gained valuable insight into its potential heading into next season.
“It gave the team an opportunity to compete against some of the best programs and showed everyone what this group was capable of accomplishing together,” said Pastrana. “The experience motivated the team even more and gave the players a better understanding of the preparation, discipline and focus needed to reach the next level.”
Senior Kailie Kaauwai said one of her favorite parts of the season was the support the team showed one another, especially after difficult games. She said her senior year helped her better appreciate the memories and the meaning of teamwork.
“One of the biggest highlights was winning first place in MILs, a moment that reflected all the hard work, dedication and teamwork we put in throughout the season,” said senior Kaiya Dunnam-Enos. “I truly couldn’t have asked for a better team to finish my senior season with, and the memories and lessons from softball will stay with me long after graduation.”
Winning the Maui Interscholastic League championship reflected the team’s effort throughout the season, and the Lady Farmers are already looking to build on their success.
“Our experience at states gave us valuable lessons about what it takes to succeed, and it motivated us to work even harder in the offseason,” said Pastrana. “Moving forward, I want to continue building our team chemistry, strengthen our skills and discipline, and create an environment where the players believe in themselves and each other. The goal is not only to return to states, but to come back stronger, more prepared and ready to compete for a championship.”

The way the girls came together was a key part of the season, highlighting the impact of senior leadership and the team’s commitment to playing for one another and the program’s overall success.
“It was more than just games and practices; it was about the memories, the friendships, and growing with my teammates,” said senior Olana Kaai-Phifer. “One of the biggest highlights for me was seeing how much our team improved and how we continued to support each other through every win, loss and challenge.”
Senior Kaleiola Paleka said she will remember the laughs, wins, losses and growth that brought the team closer together.
“As a catcher, I learned how important trust, communication and leadership really are, and I’m grateful I got to grow with a team that felt more like family,” said senior Kiara Mollena-Ritte. “One of the biggest highlights was winning MIL together after all the hard work and dedication we put in throughout the season.”
Another senior on the team, Kelce Molina, said making the state tournament meant a great deal to the team. She noted the challenges of limited resources and travel from Molokai, but said the team showed that adversity does not determine success.
“My heart is just full of pride,” said senior Puakea Balbas. “I could not be more proud to be a part of this team. These girls overcame every obstacle thrown their way with pure determination and teamwork.”
Senior Maya Ignacio, who played all four years, stepped into a leadership role this season and helped guide younger players by leading by example while experiencing memorable moments along the way.
From challenges to championships, this season reflected the strength of a team built on unity and trust, leaving a lasting mark on the program and its players looking forward to the future of Molokai softball.
