Haiku woman dies after May 10 wreck on Honoapiilani Highway

A woman from Haiku died Sunday from injuries sustained in a traffic collision May 10 on the Honoapiilani Highway in Kihei.

According to Maui police, Teresa Campisi, 55, was driving a 2015 Volkswagen Jetta south on the highway at about 9:45 p.m. May 10. According to the preliminary investigation, Campisi was approaching the intersection with North Kihei Road when the Jetta drifted left across the grass median into oncoming traffic.

The Jetta sideswiped a 2016 Dodge van before colliding head-on with a 2022 Volkswagen Atlas.

Campisi was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center with life-threatening injuries before being transferred to the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu on May 11 for further treatment.

Police said Campisi was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

A 32-year-old Wailuku man who was driving the Atlas sustained minor injuries and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition. The van was being driven by a 42-year-old man from Lahaina, who was not injured in the collision. Both men were wearing seatbelts.

Campisi’s death marks Maui County’s third traffic fatality of 2026, compared to nine at the same time last year. The investigation into the wreck is ongoing.
