Hawaiʻi Organics Compost has begun selling locally produced compost, active mulch and custom soil blends, turning Maui green waste into reusable resources.

According to the organization, since opening its Waikapu facility last September, it has diverted about 10,416 tons of green waste from the landfill, helping extend landfill life while producing soil amendments for agriculture and landscaping use.

“With production now fully underway, we’re excited to provide Maui with locally made compost and active mulch,” said Manager Jenny Sullivan. “Our goal has always been to close the loop here on Maui — taking material that would otherwise be landfilled and turning it into something that directly supports our land, our agriculture, and our community.”

The compost is designed to improve soil quality and water retention, while the active mulch provides ground cover to reduce erosion and conserve moisture.

The organization said all materials are made from source-separated green waste such as tree trimmings and yard debris, and are tested by a third-party laboratory certified by the U.S. Composting Council. The company does not accept food waste or biosolids.

The facility also works with the Hawaii Department of Agriculture to support efforts to prevent the spread of the coconut rhinoceros beetle.

Products are available for pickup at the Waikapu site, with delivery available. The facility is open from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. For more information, go to hawaiiorganicscompost.com or call 808-269-8064.
