Kihei sinkhole will take time to fix

Repairs to the sinkhole near Kamaole Beach Park II on South Kihei Road are expected to continue through the fall, according to Maui County officials.

“We understand how disruptive this closure has been for residents, businesses and everyone who relies on South Kihei Road each day,” Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen said in a news release. “The damage from the kona low impacted multiple infrastructure systems, requiring a more complex repair and redesign focused on long-term stability and resilience.”

Bissen said his administration is working to improve the roadway to better withstand future storm events.

Motorists are asked to continue following posted detours and allow extra travel time. County officials added that all businesses and residences in the area remain accessible.

The damage was caused by record-breaking rainfall from kona low storms in March overwhelming the drainage system.

According to the county, repairs are expected to take longer because the storm damaged multiple underground infrastructure systems, caused significant undermining beneath the roadway and requires custom engineering designs that must meet federal funding, permitting and construction requirements.

The county Department of Public Works will provide additional construction scheduling and project updates as information becomes available.

The county said the Office of Economic Development is working with state partners to coordinate programs for businesses affected by the damaged road.

Starting at $4.62/week.
