Maui Charity Walk raises more than $1.6M for nonprofits

Based on the preliminary totals, the 47th Maui Charity Walk has raised a record-setting $1.62 million for 74 nonprofit organizations in Maui County.
The annual fundraiser organized by the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association drew nearly 2,000 participants, including visitor industry employees, nonprofit representatives, business leaders and visitors for the 2.5-mile walk on Saturday.
Event organizers said both fundraising totals and attendance surpassed previous records. Additionally, funding will continue to be accepted until May 31.
The final tally for this year’s Maui Charity Walk will be available at an awards ceremony Aug. 7 at Fairmont Kea Lani.

Nearly 2,000 people including visitor industry employees, nonprofit agencies, business leaders and visitors took part in the 2.5-mile walk, surpassing previous year’s attendance counts.
Many organizations began their fundraising efforts months ago by collecting pledges from friends, family, hotel guests and neighbors, as well as holding events such as Zumba classes, rummage sales, an on-air radio auction and a golf tournament. All of the proceeds raised will stay in Maui County.

Top fundraising honors were awarded across multiple categories.
The Grand Wailea took top honors among the hotel properties with $52,272 raised, followed by The Ritz Carlton Kapalua with $34,677 raised and the Hyatt Regency Resort & Spa with $33,632 raised.
VIP Foodservice led the business category with $33.047 raised, while ABC Stores was second with $2,400 raised and First Hawaiian Bank raised $1,542.
Winning the top honor in the nonprofit category was the Hale Kau Kau team, which collected $217,469, while Hale Makua was second at $179,066 and Maui Economic Opportunity raised the third highest total at $165,235.
“We are thankful for our friends and colleagues in the hospitality industry that came out today to support the community and these deserving organizations,” said John Pele, executive director of the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association. “During these turbulent times, it’s humbling to see the commitment made in support of these nonprofits.”
The statewide Charity Walk is the largest single-day fundraising event by a nonprofit in Hawaii with events on all major islands. The Maui walk was held in conjunction with events on Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii Island.

For the last seventeen years, Maui’s Charity Walk has brought in more funding than any other county, and for the 10th year in a row, it has brought in more than $1 million for Maui organizations.
