Presentation to cover program that assists visitors in crisis
Alex Witkin
At the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset meeting May 19, Alexanda Witkin, Ph.D., will discuss the Maui Nui Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii, a program operating under contract with the Hawaii Tourism Authority to support visitors on Maui, Molokai and Lanai who experience serious adversity during their stay.
Attendees will gain insight into how the program provides compassionate, on-the-ground assistance during crises while coordinating with local partners to help visitors navigate complex and often overwhelming situations.
A longtime Maui resident, Witkin has a background in higher education, mediation, behavioral health and tourism-related work. She holds a doctorate in ethnic studies from the University of California, Berkeley, and has served as an assistant professor of Native American studies at Montana State University.
The meeting will be at the YMCA West Side Resource Center in the former Tamura’s building at Emerald Plaza, 226 Kupuohi St. in Lahaina. The social period will begin at 5 p.m. The formal program is scheduled from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
