Virtual seabird sanctuary tours offered online
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources is offering new virtual field trips to two remote Hawaiian seabird sanctuaries as part of the “Year of Our Coastal Kuleana.”
The online interactive tours explore Lehua Island near Niihau and Holaniku, also known as Kure Atoll, in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands through 360-degree videos, photos and interviews with biologists and cultural practitioners.
According to the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife, the virtual experiences are designed for classrooms but are open to learners of all ages.
An in-person guided presentation of the Hōlanikū virtual field trip will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 28 at the NOAA Pacific Islands Ocean Education Center at Aloha Tower Marketplace in Honolulu. Virtual reality headsets also will be available.
Free registration for this event is required at tinyurl.com/ycvnmuby.
