Workshop for commercial property owners in Lahaina historic districts coming Thursday

The Maui County Office of Recovery will host a workshop May 7 to help property owners in the Lahaina historic districts navigate the rebuilding process.

The workshop will be from 3-5 p.m. at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Morgado Hall and will provide guidance for commercial property owners in Lahaina historic districts 1 and 2, as well as architects, engineers and business owners with coastal or culturally sensitive properties.

The workshop is free and open to the public. Property owners are encouraged to bring specific project questions.

“We’ve heard clearly from commercial property owners that historic district requirements remain one of the biggest areas of uncertainty,” Office of Recovery Administrator John Smith said in a news release. “This new workshop is designed to cut through that confusion.”

The county said design guidelines have been finalized, with streamlined pathways for certain cultural reviews. It is also developing policies for a land buyout program that would give eligible owners the option to sell their properties to the county.

The county’s first commercial permitting workshop on Feb. 18 drew more than 60 property owners, architects, engineers and other industry professionals.
