A 4.7 magnitude earthquake was reported off Hawaii Island late Tuesday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake occurred at 10:37 p.m. east of Papaikou at a depth of 39 kilometers. As of Wednesday morning, nearly 800 people had reported feeling the quake through the USGS “Did You Feel It?” reporting system.

The quake was one of several recorded in the Hawaiian Islands in recent months. A map of recent seismic activity shows earthquakes clustered around Hawaii Island, with additional activity reported near Maui.

The Hawaiian Islands are among the most seismically active areas in the United States because of ongoing volcanic activity.
