Anti-theft operation nets multiple arrests at Wailuku Home Depot

A two-day enforcement operation at Home Depot in Wailuku resulted in multiple arrests related to shoplifting, drug offenses and other crimes, according to the Maui Police Department.

The “Barcode Bandits” operation was conducted June 9-10 through a partnership between Maui police and Home Depot to address ongoing retail thefts.

The effort involved Home Depot loss prevention personnel and officers from the Maui Police Department’s Community Policing Unit, Vice Division, Traffic Section and Criminal Investigation Division, along with representatives from the Maui County Prosecutor’s Office. Plainclothes officers worked with loss prevention staff to identify and apprehend people suspected of theft and other criminal activity within the store.

According to police, five people were arrested and charged with shoplifting-related offenses during the operation. Those arrested were a 20-year-old Kihei man, a 34-year-old Paia man, a 36-year-old Wailuku man, a 39-year-old Haiku man and a 65-year-old Kahului man.

Police said the operation also resulted in five felony drug arrests, one felony arrest for habitual property crime and one felony arrest for unauthorized possession of confidential personal information.

Retail theft remains a significant challenge for businesses and can lead to financial losses that affect the broader community, police said. Authorities noted that many retail theft suspects are repeat offenders who target multiple businesses throughout Maui County.

Police said the operation reflects ongoing efforts to work with local businesses and community partners to address crime and public safety concerns.
