County urges hurricane preparedness as season begins
Maui County officials are urging residents and visitors to prepare for hurricane season, which began Sunday and runs through Nov. 30.
The National Weather Service is forecasting an above-normal season in the Central Pacific basin, including Hawaii, with a 70% chance of above-normal activity.
Forecasters expect between five and 13 tropical cyclones, including tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes.
The Maui Emergency Management Agency is recommending that households be "Two Weeks Ready" by maintaining at least 14 days of food, water, medications and other essential supplies.
Residents also are encouraged to prepare go bags with important documents, medications, chargers, flashlights, batteries, food and water in case evacuations are needed.
Officials noted that hurricanes and tropical storms can bring destructive winds, storm surge, flooding and heavy rainfall.
