Haiku man killed in motorcycle crash in Makawao

A 48-year-old man from Haiku died in a motorcycle crash Wednesday night in Makawao.

The man’s name has not yet been released.

The crash occurred at about 10:28 p.m. on Piiholo Road near Mahiai Place. According to Maui police, the man was driving a 2006 Honda CRF223F motorcycle north on Piiholo Road when he failed to negotiate a left bend in the road and went up an embankment.

The man was ejected from the motorcycle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicates the man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The investigation is ongoing.

The death marks Maui County’s fifth traffic fatality of 2026, compared with 11 at the same time last year.

It is also the county’s second motorcycle-related traffic fatality in less than two weeks after a 55-year-old Kula man died June 6 as a result of a motorcycle crash June 1 on Pulehu Road. The victim in the June 1 wreck was also not wearing a helmet, according to police.
