Kahului man arrested in connection with Hoʻokipa-area robbery
A 34-year-old Kahului man was arrested Friday in connection with an armed robbery reported earlier this week near Hoʻokipa Beach Park, according to Maui police.
Police said the man was arrested at about 2:20 p.m. on a $100,000 warrant related to the June 10 robbery. He also had additional warrants totaling $320,000 and remained in police custody Friday.
The robbery was reported at about 5:27 a.m. Wednesday on Hana Highway near the Hoʻokipa area.
According to police, a 46-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman from Haiku were confronted by a man armed with a handgun who demanded their vehicle. During the incident, both victims were struck by projectiles believed to have been discharged from the weapon before the suspect fled in the stolen vehicle.
The victims were treated at the scene by medics and released. No other injuries were reported.
Using vehicle-tracking information, officers located the stolen vehicle a short time later in the Haiku area. Police deployed a drone, which identified the stolen vehicle along with a second vehicle believed to be associated with the incident.
Police said both vehicles attempted to flee as officers approached but were later abandoned. The occupants then fled on foot into nearby brush and pastureland.
Patrol officers, the K-9 unit and members of the Maui Police Department Air Unit aboard Hekili searched for the suspects but were unable to locate them at the time.
The investigation remains ongoing.
