Kalaupapa National Historical Park to offer public tours starting July 9

Kalaupapa National Historical Park will offer public tours starting July 9, with reservations available through recreation.gov.

The tours will be offered twice a week, according to the National Park Service.

The park warned the tour is strenuous and participants must be prepared to hike up to 8 miles in hot, humid conditions. The route includes traversing the Kalaupapa Pali Trail in both directions, a roughly 3-mile one-way trail with about 1,700 feet of elevation change, the equivalent of about 20 flights of stairs and more than 2,000 steps.

Participants must be at least 16 years old. Reservation tickets are $20 per person, with a $1 nonrefundable ticket fee for each reservation. Reservations must be completed at least 24 hours in advance.

The announcement comes after Kalaupapa National Historical Park said earlier this month that Kalaupapa Saints Tours was no longer operating scheduled tours following the death of Aunty Meli Watanuki, who helped establish the tour company.

At the time, the National Park Service said there were no park tour options but that it would continue exploring alternatives for visitors to experience Kalaupapa.
