Kula golfer earns spot in Junior World Championship

Kula golfer Robert Loree captured the boys 13-14 division title and earned a berth in the Uswing Mojing Junior World Championship during the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association’s Uswing Mojing Junior World Qualifier held June 3-5 at Wailea Gold Golf Course.

Loree was the only Maui player among the four division winners at the 54-hole tournament, which drew 91 junior golfers from across Hawaii.

The event serves as one of the HSJGA’s largest tournaments of the summer and awards points toward the association’s Player of the Year race and qualification for the invitation-only HSJGA Tour Championship in December.

By winning the boys 13-14 division, Loree secured one of 13 qualifying spots awarded to Hawaii golfers for the Uswing Mojing Junior World Championship, an international tournament hosted by the San Diego Junior Golf Association that annually attracts approximately 1,250 junior golfers from 56 countries and 42 states.

Kihei’s Lakota Lee also turned in one of the top Maui performances, tying for fourth in the boys 15-18 division with a 54-hole total of 222.

Other division winners at the Wailea tournament were Jake Otani of Hilo in boys 15-18, Brooke O’Heron of Honolulu in girls 13-14 and Jacey Kage of Aiea in girls 15-18.

Additional Junior World qualifiers included Leo Saito and Isaac Kim in boys 15-18; Lucy Cui and Amelia Silva in girls 13-14; and Kira Uno, Mia Nakaoka and Brooke Asao in girls 15-18.

The tournament was played at Wailea Gold Golf Course, with boys competing from the 6,809-yard blue tees and girls playing from the 6,077-yard white tees.

Other Maui golfers included Kyle Trudell of Kula, who finished sixth in boys 13-14 with a 244, and Graham Garcia of Kahului, who placed ninth at 255. Aaron Hall of Lahaina tied for 23rd in boys 15-18 at 242, Owen Hegrenes of Lahaina was 27th at 248, and Kalani Douglas of Wailuku tied for 32nd at 259.

In girls 13-14, Coco Arnds of Lahaina placed eighth at 244, Olivia McNeil of Wailuku was 15th at 261 and Kinsey Reul of Lahaina tied for 18th at 294.

In girls 15-18, Emi McMillen of Lahaina tied for 14th at 243, Naiya Hamasaki of Wailuku was 17th at 251, Kelsey Reul of Lahaina tied for 19th at 257, Reina Mae Lana of Wailuku was 23rd at 265 and Briza Tibayan of Wailuku finished 24th at 275.
