Maui County Council approves $1.6B budget for fiscal year 2027

The Maui County Council has approved a $1.6 billion budget for the 2027 fiscal year that includes funding for affordable housing, social services and disaster recovery efforts.

The County Council unanimously passed the budget on second reading Friday.

According to Council Chair Alice Lee, the spending plan includes approximately $1.2 billion for county operations and $351 million for capital improvement projects after council members reduced the proposed budget by about $8.4 million during the review process.

“I would like to thank all those who contributed to the finalization of the budget as this is a complicated process,” Lee said in a news release. “We aimed to streamline this budget in a fiscally responsible manner to continue our support of the communities in Maui County.”

Among the largest allocations highlighted by the council chair are investments in affordable housing projects. The budget includes $9 million for the Hoʻonani Village mixed-use development project and $6.5 million for Habitat for Humanity Maui.

The budget also provides funding for social service programs, including $2 million for the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii and $1.2 million for Partners in Development Foundation.

Disaster recovery and mitigation projects also received support. The budget allocates $6 million to the Lahaina Community Land Trust and $3 million for Upcountry wildfire rebuild, recovery and mitigation efforts.

The council-approved budget now heads to Mayor Richard Bissen for consideration. If signed, it will take effect July 1.

Starting at $4.62/week.
