MFD reminds public about fireworks rules ahead of July 4 holiday
The sale of consumer fireworks for the Fourth of July holiday will begin Monday and continue until 8 p.m. July 4, according to the Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety.
A fireworks permit is not required during designated times for consumer fireworks such as sparklers, snakes and cylindrical or cone fountains, which emit effects no higher than 12 feet off the ground, according to the department.
Retail stores will not sell firecrackers for the holiday, so firecracker permits will not be available for purchase at those stores.
Fireworks may legally be set off only from 1 to 9 p.m. July 4. Setting off fireworks outside those hours can bring fines up to $2,000.
The Maui Fire Department is also reminding residents that aerial fireworks are illegal and extremely dangerous. The import, transfer, sale or use of aerial fireworks without a permit is a felony.
Other fireworks restrictions include prohibitions on removing or extracting pyrotechnic contents, throwing ignited fireworks from a moving vehicle and setting off fireworks within 1,000 feet of health care facilities or facilities for animals.
Fireworks also may not be set off by schools, on public roads, in county parks, at county facilities, in cane fields or at places of worship. It is also illegal for someone without a permit to set off fireworks within 500 feet of any hotel.
The department said fireworks may not be sold or given to minors, and minors may not possess, purchase or set off fireworks, except when parents or guardians allow a minor to use fireworks under the immediate supervision and control of an adult.
The department also urged residents to use caution, warning that fireworks can cause severe burns and eye injuries. Young children should not be given fireworks, including sparklers, which can burn at 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Older children should only use fireworks under the direct supervision of an adult.
Residents using fireworks should read and follow manufacturer warnings and instructions, use fireworks only in a clear, flat area away from structures, dry grass, brush or other flammable materials, and keep a water hose or bucket of water nearby.
Consumer fireworks sales locations include:
• Walmart parking lot tent, 101 Pakaula St., Kahului;
• Safeway Maui Lani Wailuku parking lot tent, 58 Maui Lani Parkway, Wailuku;
• Safeway Kihei parking lot tent, 277 Piikea Ave., Kihei.
“The best way to stay safe is not to use fireworks at all,” the department said. “Leave fireworks to the professionals.”
