Police: Haiku couple car-jacked by armed man on Hana Highway
A Haiku couple was treated for minor injuries after an armed robbery Wednesday morning near Hoʻokipa Beach Park, according to Maui police.
Police said officers responded at about 5:27 a.m. to a report of a first-degree robbery on Hana Highway near the park.
A preliminary investigation found that a 46-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman, both of Haiku, were confronted by an unknown man armed with a handgun.
The suspect allegedly demanded the couple’s vehicle, and the couple was struck by projectiles believed to have been discharged from suspect’s weapon before he fled in their vehicle.
The couple were treated at the scene by medics and released. No other injuries were reported.
Using vehicle-tracking information, officers located the stolen vehicle a short time later in the Haiku area. Police said an MPD drone identified the stolen vehicle and a second vehicle believed to be connected to the incident.
As officers approached, both vehicles attempted to flee and were later abandoned on a nearby roadway.
The occupants then fled on foot into surrounding brush and pastureland.
Patrol officers, the K-9 unit and members of the MPD Air Unit aboard Hekili searched the area but were unable to locate the suspects.
The investigation remains ongoing.
