SBA extends disaster loan deadline for March storm recovery

The U.S. Small Business Administration has extended the deadline for homeowners, renters, businesses and private nonprofit organizations affected by Hawaii’s March severe storms, flooding, landslides and mudslides to apply for physical disaster loans.

The new deadline to apply for physical damage loans is Aug. 13. The loans are available to those impacted by the disaster that occurred March 10-24 in Hawaii, Maui and Honolulu counties. Economic Injury Disaster Loans are also available, with an application deadline of Jan. 7, 2027.

The SBA offers several types of disaster assistance. Business Physical Disaster Loans can help businesses repair or replace disaster-damaged property, including real estate, inventories, supplies, machinery and equipment. Businesses of any size may apply, as can eligible private nonprofit organizations such as charities, churches and private universities.

Economic Injury Disaster Loans provide working capital to help small businesses, agricultural cooperatives, aquaculture businesses and most private nonprofits meet financial obligations that cannot be met because of the disaster.

Home Disaster Loans are available to homeowners and renters to repair or replace disaster-damaged real estate and personal property, including automobiles.

There is no cost to apply, and applicants are not required to accept a loan if approved.

Interest rates start at 2.875% for homeowners and renters, 4% for businesses and 3.625% for private nonprofit organizations. Loan amounts can be up to $500,000 for primary residences, up to $100,000 for personal property and up to $2 million for businesses and nonprofits.

Loan terms may extend up to 30 years. Approved borrowers will not be required to make payments or pay interest during the first 12 months after disbursement. Eligible applicants may also qualify for up to a 20% loan increase for mitigation improvements designed to reduce future disaster damage.

Applications can be submitted online at lending.sba.gov/search-disaster/?disaster=HI-20010. In-person assistance is available on Maui at the South Maui Community Park Gymnasium, 1501 Liloa Drive in Kihei.

Starting at $4.80/week.
