Two hikers rescued from Haleakala Crater

Two hikers from Austin, Texas, were airlifted off of Haleakala on Monday after they had difficulty with the high elevation and were unable to make it back to the parking lot at the crater rim.

Maui firefighters were called at 12:49 p.m. Monday to a mountain rescue in the crater. The hikers, a man and a woman, had made contact with National Park Service rangers before being located by Rescue 10 firefighters aboard Air 1.

The hikers were evacuated by Air 1 and taken to Kula Park, where they were further evaluated by firefighters from the Kula Fire Station.

Responding units included Rescue 10 aboard Air 1, Engine 13 from Kula and National Park Service rangers.

The rescue was concluded at 2:38 p.m.
