Two rescued after being swept into ocean at La Perouse Bay
Two people were rescued Saturday afternoon after being swept off a rocky shoreline by large surf at the south end of La Perouse Bay in South Maui.
Maui firefighters and ocean safety personnel responded at about 4:17 p.m. to the Hanamanioa Lighthouse area after receiving reports that two people had been swept into the water.
A woman who suffered a head laceration was picked up from the water by an ocean safety jet ski and taken to shore, where she was turned over to emergency medical personnel.
A man was able to exit the water on his own and was transported by Air 1 to the north side of the bay for evaluation. He suffered cuts and scrapes.
The rescue occurred while a high surf warning was in effect.
