Free caregiver safety workshop set for July 30
Ohana Care Maui will host a free workshop July 30 in Kihei to help family caregivers, seniors and care partners safely assist with everyday movement and transfers.
“Safe Transfers Save Everyone” will be from 4 to 4:45 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session, at Holiday Kalama Heights. The workshop is free and open to the community.
Participants will learn safer body mechanics, techniques for reducing back and shoulder strain, proper positioning for standing and pivot transfers, and how gait belts and supportive footwear can improve safety. The class also will cover how to assist someone who cannot take steps independently, slow a fall, protect the person’s head and help someone get up after a fall.
Demonstrations will include positioning chairs, preparing a transfer area, helping someone move forward in a chair, using the “nose over toes” method and assisting with controlled sitting. The workshop is part of the Ohana Care Speaker Series, presented in partnership with Holiday Kalama Heights.
Registration is available at ohanacaremaui.regfox.com/ohana-care-speaker-series.
