Hawaiian Electric has issued a Public Safety Power Shutoff watch for parts of Maui as high winds and dry conditions increase wildfire risk.
The utility said Friday it is closely monitoring conditions on Maui as well as areas of Hawaii Island. A watch means Hawaiian Electric could proactively shut off power within the next 24 to 48 hours if weather conditions worsen, though no shutoffs have been ordered.
The company urged customers in affected areas to prepare for the possibility of extended outages by reviewing emergency plans, checking emergency supplies and ensuring backup arrangements are in place for anyone who relies on electrically powered medical equipment.
Hawaiian Electric noted that weather conditions could also cause outages unrelated to its Public Safety Power Shutoff program.
