Maui records second wettest June in 107 years

Maui and Kahoolawe recorded some of their heaviest June rainfall in 107 years. But the same couldn’t be said of Kauai or Oahu, according to the Hawaii Monthly Climate Summary. Courtesy photo

If you thought the grass seemed greener than normal on Maui last month because of the rain, you might be right.

June on Maui ranked as the second wettest in 107 years, according to the Hawaii Monthly Climate Summary. Maui experienced wet conditions, with 83% of the land area seeing at least abnormally wet conditions and 16% seeing extreme wetness or worse.

Maui averaged 9.3 inches of rainfall in June — 5.9 inches above normal, the summary said. Portions of Maui and Kahoolawe had nearly twice as much rainfall as usual in June.

A weak surface trough moving in from the southeast brought elevated moisture June 1 and 2, with the heaviest rainfall over the south slopes of Haleakala on Maui, according to the National Weather Service.

“Rainfall totals generally ranged from 3 to 5 inches,” said Tina Stall, a National Weather Service senior hydrologist, in a monthly report.

Stall described the weather as typical summer windward rainfall across Maui County in June, with all sites experiencing above-average rainfall.

She said Puu Kukui in the West Maui Mountains had the highest monthly total in the county with 36.55 inches, or 125% above average. Puu Kukui also had the highest daily total of 6.31 inches on June 2.

“This site also recorded its wettest June since 2005,” Stall said.

She said several other sites recorded their wettest June in areas of South Maui, East Maui and Kahului.

“The year-to-date totals for all reporting sites in the county were still near to above average, around 100% to 300%,” she said. “The highest YTD total was at Puu Kukui with 207.18, 108% of average.”

The summary noted that statewide, June was the third wettest in 107 years, with rainfall 183% above normal.

Temperatures in June averaged 68.1 degrees, with an average maximum temperature of 78.2 degrees statewide.

Oahu did not fare as well, with June ranking 34th in 107 years and average rainfall at 3.6 inches.

Kauai ranked 33rd in 107 years, with average rainfall at 5.1 inches.
