A parking program designed to prioritize Hawaii residents will launch July 15 at Kamaole Beach Parks I and III in Kihei.

Standard rates for nonresidents will be $10 for daily parking, $50 for a weekly pass and $150 for a monthly pass. Parking will remain free seven days a week at all Park Maui beach parking areas for residents with a Hawaii driver’s license.

According to the Maui County Department of Transportation, the new program is intended to support local residents.

“At the Kama’ole beaches, we are especially focused on supporting kama’āina through free parking and preferred resident recreation hours, while also providing convenient ticketless parking options for visitors,” said Marc Takamori, director of the department.

Park Maui is part of the county’s effort to improve parking access at key destinations.

The program uses license plate-based technology that links each parking session to a vehicle, allowing drivers to park without taking a paper ticket.

Parking ambassadors will be available on-site to assist drivers, answer questions and help residents and visitors use the app and pay stations. The Kamaole Beach parking areas are in Zone 797.

The county said Kamaole II will not be part of the initial launch while road repairs continue following the March storms.

The dirt lot across from Kamaole I, next to the ABC Store, also will not be included in the initial launch. The lot will be added to Park Maui after the South Kihei Road sinkhole is repaired and the road reopens.

The dirt lot is currently open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily and remains free for beachgoers, as well as employees and customers visiting businesses near the Kamaole Shopping District.

On weekends and county-observed holidays, parking in the paved lots at Kamaole I and III will be reserved for residents before 10 a.m. The beach parks will remain open to everyone.

The Park Maui program applies only to the paved lots.
