Pukalani man arrested after alleged burglary also accused of assaulting officers

A 43-year-old Pukalani man who was arrested Friday is accused of breaking into a Wailuku building, threatening officers, driving a vehicle toward them and later assaulting officers during his arrest.

According to police, officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress at about 5:04 a.m. at 2080 Vineyard St., where the man had allegedly forced his way through an exterior door and kicked interior doors inside the building.

When officers arrived, they found the man on the sidewalk outside the building, and he allegedly threatened to kill them.

At approximately 5:24 a.m., the man got inside his nearby vehicle, made a U-turn and drove onto the sidewalk toward the officers before fleeing westbound on Vineyard Street toward North Market Street, continuing at least as far as Central Avenue, at a high rate of speed.

Approximately one minute later, man returned on Vineyard Street at a high rate of speed toward the officers before driving away.

The man continued onto High Street, where he lost control of the vehicle, striking a light pole before crashing into the loading area of a building at the intersection of Main Street and South High Street.

Before officers reached the crash scene, the man fled on foot toward Main Street. A witness reported seeing him run in the direction of the Iao Valley. Officers found the man hiding on the side of a building at Main Street and South High streets.

As officers took the man into custody, he allegedly assaulted one officer and resisted arrest. Responding officers brought the man to the ground, where he continued kicking at officers. During the struggle, officers deployed a taser.

Three officers sustained injuries during the incident. One officer was bitten on the wrist, another suffered strained ligaments in a hand and a third sustained minor abrasions.

The man was treated at the scene for injuries sustained during the altercation. Police said he remains in custody pending the continuation of the investigation and the review of applicable charges.
