New restrictions are being imposed on the transportation of materials that could carry coconut rhinoceros beetles to Maui and Lanai.
The state Board of Agriculture and Biosecurity approved Interim Rule 26-2 on Tuesday, prohibiting shipments to the two islands of coconut fruit and several types of host material, including live plants with organic material attached to their roots, untreated compost, wood chips, mulch and other decomposing plant matter.
Some materials may still be transported after inspection, including bare-root plants, treated host materials carried in beetle-resistant containers and certain unused erosion-control products stored in approved facilities. The rule also includes exemptions for many fresh foods, seeds, cut flowers, lei, lumber and other preserved wood products, along with qualifying laboratory-grown plants. The movement of host materials between Maui and Lanai is not restricted.
