Three teenagers have been arrested in connection with alleged thefts totaling more than $81,000 from stores at The Shops at Wailea.
According to Maui police, officers responded at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday to the retail complex at 3750 Wailea Alanui Drive after receiving reports of an organized retail theft in progress.
Police said three males entered a store and stole three luxury handbags valued at approximately $77,950.
Officers later detained an 18-year-old Miami man and a 15-year-old Lahaina boy after receiving reports that they had entered another store in the shopping center. Police said the same group also allegedly stole a handbag and wallet valued at approximately $1,980 and a polo shirt valued at approximately $1,500 from a second retailer.
A third suspect fled before officers arrived, police said.
The 15-year-old was taken into custody and later released to his parents pending further investigation. The 18-year-old was arrested and later released after posting $6,000 bail.
Police executed a search warrant Wednesday on a vehicle believed to have been used by the suspects and recovered five luxury handbags, $378 in cash and almost a gram of what police believe to be cocaine.
A 17-year-old Lahaina boy voluntarily turned himself in Thursday at the Lahaina Police Station. He was arrested on suspicion of second-degree theft and criminal conspiracy and later released to his parents with authorization from Family Court.
