Two swimmers rescued in less than two hours at Maui beach parks

Ocean safety officers responded to two separate emergencies Wednesday, including one at Baldwin Beach Park and another Kanaha Beach Park, according to the Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety.

The first incident was reported at 9:51 a.m. at Baldwin Beach Park, where Ocean Safety officers noticed a 57-year-old man in distress in the shorebreak several hundred yards from the lifeguard tower.

The man told rescuers he believed he had injured his neck and shoulder and could not get out of the water on his own.

Officers took spinal injury precautions, removed the man from the water and secured him to a spinal immobilization device before transferring him to firefighters and emergency medical personnel.

A second rescue was reported at 11:42 a.m. at Kanaha Beach Park, where Ocean Safety officers saw an unresponsive swimmer being assisted by another person less than 50 feet from shore.

When rescuers reached the swimmer, they found a 29-year-old man having a seizure in the water. Officers removed him from the water and provided care until firefighters and emergency medical personnel arrived to transport him.

Starting at $4.80/week.
