1 min read

Motorists should expect weekend road closures and delays on portions of Makawao Avenue beginning Aug. 8 as Maui County continues its reconstruction project.

The third phase of paving will require full weekend closures of both lanes from 6 a.m. on Saturdays to 6:30 p.m. on Sundays through Aug. 23. Access will be limited to local traffic.

The scheduled closures, which are subject to change, include Makani Road to Eddie Tam Memorial Center from Aug. 8-9, Eddie Tam Memorial Center to Maha Road from Aug. 15-16 and Makani Road to Maha Road from Aug. 22-23.

Weekday construction also will continue between Apana Road and Ai Street from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with single-lane closures in active work zones.

The Makawao Avenue Reconstruction Project covers about 1.8 miles between Apana Road and Ai Street. The first two paving phases, from Apana Road to Makani Road, have already been completed.

The project began in October 2025 and is expected to be completed in February 2027. Improvements include pavement reconstruction, sidewalk, curb and drainage upgrades, guardrail replacement, and new striping and signage.
