Woman dies, another critically injured in East Maui ocean rescue

A 56-year-old California woman died and a 53-year-old Texas woman was hospitalized in critical condition after they were pulled from the water Wednesday morning at Koki Beach in East Maui.

Maui Fire Department crews responded to the ocean rescue at 10:16 a.m. after receiving reports that one unresponsive person had been pulled from the water while another remained unresponsive in the ocean.

According to the department, bystanders began CPR on the Texas woman before firefighters arrived. An off-duty firefighter entered the water with a surfboard to retrieve the California woman before responding crews arrived.

Firefighters continued CPR on the first woman and began CPR on the second after bringing her to shore. A pulse was restored on the Texas woman, who was flown by air ambulance to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

The California woman was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.

The department said both women suffered submersion injuries.
