Approximately 28,700 Maui County customers were without power as of 7 a.m. Sunday due to Tropical Storm Lala, according to Hawaiian Electric.
The outages affected all of West Maui, parts of Upcountry, South and Central Maui and Haiku, as well as areas of Lanai and Molokai.
Hawaiian Electric said crews were beginning damage assessments in accessible areas of Maui County, Hawaii Island and Oahu before restoration work could proceed.
Weather permitting, crews planned ground and aerial inspections using helicopters and drones.
The utility warned that restoration could take weeks in the hardest-hit rural areas of Hawaii Island.
About 197,400 customers across the state remained without power as of 7 a.m., including approximately 58,000 on Hawaii Island and 110,700 on Oahu. Hawaiian Electric said more than 63,188 customers across the five islands it serves had had power restored since the storm began.
The outage totals represent a snapshot and may change as service is restored and additional outages occur, the utility said.
Hawaiian Electric has requested assistance through the Western Region Mutual Assistance Group. About 100 crew members from mainland utilities are expected to arrive as early as Tuesday and could begin work Wednesday.
Residents should stay away from downed power lines and other damaged utility equipment. Downed lines should always be treated as energized and dangerous.
