1 min read

Approximately 7,000 Maui County customers remained without power as of 7 p.m. Sunday while Hawaiian Electric crews continued damage assessments and repairs following Tropical Storm Lala.

The outages were concentrated in Kula, Haiku, Olinda and Piiholo, where large fallen trees and debris damaged electrical infrastructure. A few isolated outages remained in West, Central and South Maui.

Hawaiian Electric said crews made significant progress Sunday after assessing damage and repairing transmission lines, allowing power to be restored to most affected customers in West and South Maui.

About 178,400 customers statewide were without power as of 7 p.m. Sunday, including approximately 44,900 on Hawaii Island and 126,500 on Oahu. Outage totals may change as service is restored and additional outages occur.

Hawaiian Electric has requested assistance from mainland utilities through the Western Region Mutual Assistance Group. About 100 crew members are expected to arrive as early as Tuesday and begin work Wednesday.

Current outage information is available at hawaiianelectric.com and through the Hawaiian Electric mobile app.
