All Hawaii public schools and state Department of Education offices will be closed Monday, Aug. 17, as officials assess damage and other impacts from Hurricane Lala.

Students should not report to their campuses. Only department employees supporting safety assessments and preparations for reopening should report to work sites. Supervisors will contact employees who need to report.

The closure will give crews additional time to complete campus safety assessments, restore utilities where necessary and address other storm-related impacts, according to the department.

Education officials will continue working with county and state agencies and plan to provide updates on Tuesday's school operations as more information becomes available.
