Maui County is asking residents and businesses to report damage from Tropical Storm Lala as officials assess whether the county may qualify for federal disaster assistance.
The reports will help document damage to homes, businesses and communities and identify what assistance residents may need, according to the county Office of Recovery and Maui Emergency Management Agency. Submitting a report does not provide direct financial or recovery assistance.
"The more complete and accurate your information is, the better it can support Maui County's request for disaster assistance," MEMA Administrator Amos Lonokailua-Hewett said in a news release. "Your report not only helps your own household but contributes to the resilience of our entire community."
County officials said the information will become part of a preliminary damage assessment, the first step in determining whether Maui County may qualify for federal disaster assistance.
The assessment may be used to support a request by the governor for a federal disaster declaration. It also can help officials identify damage that may qualify for individual assistance, including temporary housing, home repairs and replacement of damaged belongings.
How to submit a report
Residents and businesses can report damage to homes, commercial properties and private property at mauirecovers.org by selecting "Damage Assessments from Tropical Storm Lala."
Reports should include the location and a description of the damage, along with accurate contact information and photos when available. The county is encouraging residents to submit photos containing geolocation information.
People reporting both property damage and significant debris should submit a separate report for each.
Damage to public roads, infrastructure, facilities or county-managed property should be reported at tinyurl.com/mauicountylala. Photos are required when reporting damage to public property.
