Fire destroys vehicle in Maalaea; smoke prompts some residents to leave homes

A small fire Wednesday night along Hauoil Street destroyed at least one vehicle, sending a large amount of smoke into some Maalaea condominium units, causing at least one smoke alarm to go off and some residents to evacuate their units, according to the Maui County Fire Department.
"There was so much smoke," said Maalaea resident Anna Barbeau.
The fire, across the road from the Maalaea Mermaid condominium, was reported at about 9:14 p.m., according to the fire department and residents.
A spokesperson for the Maui Fire Department said the vehicle was a total loss and some damage was done to a neighboring vehicle.
